The first basketball club in Novo Mesto was founded in 1948, but not until 1983, the year of its 35th anniversary, was the city able to celebrate the conquer of the Slovenian national championship. After that triumph, however, basketball saw a decline in Novo Mesto that lasted until after the separation of the Slovenian Republic from the former Yugoslavia. Ever since member of the Slovenian first-division Krka made the big breakthrough in 2000 when its senior team defeated historical rival Union Olimpija in the Slovenian playoff finals to win the first national title. Because of that Krka received the invitation from the 2000/2001 Suproleague and a year later from Euroleague. But its ambitious plans broke down two years later when the team fell out of the regional league and its budget was drastically reduced. In 2008/2009 the club has started to climb back toward the international scene with its return to the NLB League.
