Though it carries the name of a great basketball capital, KK Zagreb had always lived a bit in the shadow of cross-town rival Cibona. But since the beginning of the Croatian League in the early 1990s, Zagreb has made a name of its own, becoming one of the consistently better teams in the country. KK Zagreb was established in 1970 and worked its way up over 19 years to join the famed first division in ex-Yugoslavia in 1989. Soon, it was part of the Croatian League, and there Zagreb joined the elite that also included Cibona, Zadar and Split. Zagreb did not win any trophies, but its diligence was rewarded with third-place finishes in the regular seasons of 1993, 1994, 1998 and 2002, plus semifinal playoff appearances in 1997 and 2002. Simultaneously, Zagreb was reaching the Final Four of the Croatian Cup tournament five different times, finishing as runner-up in 1998. Since 1992, Zagreb had been regulary participating in European competition, with its best result a quarterfinal appearance in the Korac Cup of 1993. Last season, you could say that Zagreb outdid itself, finishing sixth in a very competitive Adriatic League before going to the Croatian playoff semifinals for a second straight season. A philosophy of hard work toward continued success is why Zagreb takes an ant for its mascot, and promises that the talent will continually being nurtured to keep getting the job done right.
